Gear Choices for Corporate Events vs Industrial Photography — What I Actually Use in Prague

After more than two decades of photographing both high-profile corporate events and complex industrial environments across Prague, the Czech Republic, and internationally, I’ve learned that one camera bag does not fit all jobs. The gear I choose for an elegant gala at the Žofín Palace is often quite different from what I take to a loud, dusty, heavy machinery manufacturing plant.
As a bit of a 'gear head, ' I have accumulated a large amount of equipment over the years, and grouped them into different segments for different uses.
Here’s a practical breakdown of how I adapt my equipment to the assignment — and why these choices matter for the final images.
Corporate events & conferences: speed, discretion, and atmosphere
Corporate events demand flexibility, quiet operation, and the ability to work in challenging lighting without drawing attention.
Key Gear I Rely On:
- Fast prime lenses (24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2) — These are my go-to tools for creating beautiful background separation and capturing natural moments during networking sessions and speeches.
- 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom — The versatile workhorse that allows me to move quickly between wide establishing shots and tighter portraits.
- 70-200mm f/2.8 — Essential for photographing speakers from a distance without disturbing the audience or stage lighting. Occasionally, I will add a 1.4 teleconverter to extend the lens reach to get those very tight speaker shots or focus on someone in the crowd.
- Mirrorless bodies (SONY A Series) with excellent low-light performance — Critical for evening galas and dimly lit conference halls where flash must be used sparingly or not at all. Additionally, the silent shutter goes a long way when in small networking rooms.
The priority here is mobility and discretion. I travel light (two bodies, a waist pack) so I can move freely through the venue, anticipate moments, and remain as unobtrusive as possible.
Industrial & manufacturing photography: precision, control, and scale
Industrial shoots require a very different approach. Here, technical accuracy, controlled lighting, and the ability to capture large-scale environments take precedence.
Key Gear I Use for Industrial Work:
- Tilt-shift lenses (24mm and 35mm) — Invaluable for keeping vertical lines straight when photographing tall machinery, factory interiors, and architecture. This prevents the “falling over” effect common in wide architectural shots.
- Wider angle zooms (16-35mm or 17-40mm) — Used to show the full scale of production lines and facilities.
- Macro and standard primes — For detailed close-up shots of components, processes, or quality control work.
- Sturdy tripods and geared heads — Stability is crucial for sharp images in environments that require long exposures or precise framing.
- Controlled lighting (continuous LED panels and portable studio flashes) — Often necessary to balance harsh industrial lighting or to highlight specific areas of interest.
- Canon EOS1DsMark III Series Bodies. Why? Massive file sizes, practically indestructible bodies that can take the punishment, and are less prone to dust, which is typical of SONY bodies.
In industrial settings, the emphasis shifts from speed to precision and technical quality. Safety, cleanliness, and respect for ongoing production are always top priorities. With most manufacturing environments often challenging, I try to keep it simple with two bodies and a waste pack.
What stays the same — my core principles
My photography journey started with an interest in visual art and working with light. What began as a hobby gradually became a profession.
Over time, I moved into commercial projects and realized that photography can be not only creative but also a powerful business tool.
Regardless of whether I’m at a corporate conference or inside a factory, some things never change:
- Multiple camera bodies for redundancy
- Plenty of spare batteries and high-speed memory cards
- Reliable backup systems on location
- Professionally calibrated monitors for accurate color from capture to delivery

Choosing the right tools for each environment allows me to deliver consistent, high-quality results faster. Corporate clients get cinematic, emotionally engaging images suitable for PR and social media. Industrial clients receive technically accurate, visually compelling photographs perfect for annual reports, technical documentation, and marketing materials.
